The first fence constructed by Lumber King Building Materials Ltd. was for the family dog in 1975. As neighbours expressed interest in purchasing the same timber for their own properties, Fred Pysh saw an opportunity and offered to sell it to them. His father-in-law quickly started nicknamed Fred "The Lumber King" in jest after he borrowed a truck and started selling wood out of the driveway. In addition to teaching statistics at the University of Calgary for ten years, Fred also had his own business. When Fred gave up his tenured position in 1986 to pursue a life in work boots, Lumber King swiftly established itself as a key player in Calgary's housing and construction sectors.
As a certified member of the Better Business Bureau, Lumber King is currently run by Fred's son Dan. Dan earned a B.A. from the University of Victoria in 2001 with the intention of becoming an economist. Dan soon realised, however, that his recurring summer employment had more to impart in terms of economics lessons. Trust Dan when he says that the country's economy is predicted by timber sales.
